My dad told me that his father was one of the first to arrive in Belsen but that he didn't really talk about it. I think my grandfather served with the Royal Engineers, but I haven't done any research to verify this. I'd certainly…

Belsen

My father who served with the 131st City of Glasgow Field Regiment Royal Artillery , was used by the powers that be as a witness to the Belsen Attrocities , are there any other memories of this from the 131st or the 15th scots division in general. It seems strange that a lot of soldiers were transported there to witness it , but there was nothing official in writing ,  seems pointless ? Regards  Ian G McleanSee More

Hi Ian

I think I may have a photo of my uncle in his uniform somehwere amongst my Mums photos, I will have a look and see if I can find it. One thing I remember my uncle telling me was that the singer David Whitfield was also in the crew of Black Swan. As you can imagine he got a fair amount of stick for his singing on board. Strange coincidence I guess but my uncles aunt, my Gt Aunt also emigrated to Canada but a little earlier than your uncle but ended up in Vancouver. I still have a cousin there who lives on Saltspring Island in Vancouver Bay.

Uncle Ken went to work at Vauxhall Motors after his service and used his knowledge of diesel engines learnt from the navy to good use in the engine developement department there. He was the youngest of my Mums family and sadly passed away in 2007. He never spoke about his expeirience of the Yangtse Incident but I am not surprised by this as my Grandfather who served in WWI never spoke about that and he lived with us for over 10 years. From reading the reports it must have been a traumatic experience as he was still quite young then.

Regards Ken
